Julie Reed named the David J. Weber Fellow for Southwestern America at the William P. Clements Center for Southwest Studies

Julie Reed, steering committee member and Assistant Professor of History, has been named the David J. Weber Fellow for Southwestern America at the William P. Clements Center for Southwest Studies at Southern Methodist University for the 2013-14 academic year. Professor Reed is studying the rise of social service institutions in the Cherokee Nation in the period after the Civil War. She examines why Cherokees built these institutions as a means to deliver social services that had traditionally been administered by clans and extended families and how they used these emerging institutions to protect Cherokee sovereignty when it was threatened by allotment and Oklahoma statehood.
