Sumner Brown, a Master's candidate in the English department at UT, is working on a thesis about the role of the Knoxville-based Coal Creek Company (a land-leasing company) in the broader scope of US labor history. She is researching the 19th century Coal Creek Convict Mine Wars and two major mine explosions, which took place on the 150-year-old Coal Creek Company land, some of Tennessee's richest coal fields.
